Copenhagen — The City That Figured It Out

Copenhagen has topped the world's most liveable and happiest city lists so consistently that the rankings have started to feel like a formality. What makes the city extraordinary for visitors is that the qualities that make it liveable — beautiful public spaces, excellent food at every level, a cycling infrastructure that makes the city effortlessly navigable, cultural institutions of genuine world class, and a social warmth that the Scandinavian stereotype doesn't prepare you for — are immediately accessible to visitors. The New Nordic food movement that has reshaped global fine dining originated in Copenhagen. Noma, though operating differently, started here. And the city's casual dining scene (smørrebrød, hot dogs, the famous Copenhagen street food market) is equally rewarding without the reservation lists. Denmark is part of the Schengen Area — Australians get 90 days visa-free. Flight time from Australia is approximately 22–26 hours via Dubai, Singapore or European connections.

☀️ Best Time to Visit Copenhagen

May–August is peak season — long days (Copenhagen gets 17+ hours of daylight in June), warm temperatures (18–25°C), outdoor harbour swimming, Tivoli Gardens at full operation and Copenhagen's famous outdoor food and bar culture in full swing. This is the best time to experience the city at its most alive, though accommodation prices are highest.

September–October is excellent — the summer crowds thin, temperatures remain pleasant (12–18°C), and autumn light on Copenhagen's copper-roofed architecture is beautiful. Slightly lower prices and a more authentic city rhythm.

November–March is cold (0–5°C) with short days but Christmas markets (December), Tivoli Gardens winter opening, and significantly lower prices. The city is beautiful under snow and the indoor culture (museums, restaurants, hygge café culture) really comes into its own.

🎯 Top Things to Do in Copenhagen

Nyhavn Harbour

The iconic canal lined with colourful 17th-century merchant townhouses — Copenhagen's most photographed street and a genuine pleasure to walk along. The outdoor cafes along the north side fill in summer. Boat tours of the harbour depart from here and provide a completely different perspective on the city.

Tivoli Gardens

The world's second oldest amusement park (1843) and one of Copenhagen's most beloved institutions — gardens, restaurants, concert stages, rides and a general atmosphere of refined pleasure that has nothing in common with modern theme parks. Open seasonally (summer and Christmas). Worth a visit regardless of whether you ride anything.

New Nordic Food

Copenhagen is the epicentre of New Nordic cuisine — the movement that reinvented Scandinavian cooking using foraged, local and fermented ingredients. Geranium (currently rated world's best restaurant), Alchemist, and AOC represent the pinnacle. But the everyday Copenhagen food scene — smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches at specialist restaurants), fresh seafood, excellent Danish pastries (wienerbrød, not what Australia sells as "Danish") — is outstanding at every price point.

The Design Museums and Louisiana

The Design Museum Denmark, the National Museum and SMK (National Gallery) are all excellent. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 45 minutes north of Copenhagen by train, is one of Europe's finest modern art museums in a spectacular coastal setting — the building is designed to frame views of the sea and Sweden beyond.

Day Trip to Malmö and Kronborg

Malmö, Sweden is 35 minutes from Copenhagen Central Station by train across the Øresund Bridge (same bridge as the Nordic noir TV series The Bridge). Kronborg Castle (Hamlet's Elsinore) is 45 minutes north by train — a magnificent Renaissance fortress on the Øresund Strait.

💰 Cost of Visiting Copenhagen

Copenhagen is one of Europe's most expensive cities — budget accordingly. The experience is worth it but the costs are real.

 • Budget (hostel, supermarket meals, cycling) — AUD $120–180/day
 • Mid-range (hotel, restaurant dining, activities) — AUD $250–400/day
 • Comfortable (boutique hotel, fine dining) — AUD $450–700/day

A smørrebrød lunch at a traditional restaurant costs AUD $25–40. A coffee costs AUD $6–8. A pint of beer at a bar costs AUD $12–18. Copenhagen is cheaper if you use the excellent supermarkets (Netto, Fakta, Aldi) for breakfast and some meals. A monthly Rejsekort transport card covers unlimited travel within Copenhagen.

🛡️ Safety Tips for Copenhagen

Copenhagen is one of Europe's safest cities — very low crime, excellent emergency services. The Australian Government rates Denmark as "exercise normal safety precautions." Standard precautions apply: beware of cyclists when crossing bike lanes (they have right of way and move fast), watch for pickpocketing in tourist areas like Nyhavn and around Central Station.
